FAME THE MOVIE
My favorite song from a musical
My favorite musical movie is FAME! I have always wanted to be a star on Broadway, and my beliefs about this go far in my life. I was 5 or 6 when I developed this obsession. Of course, that didn’t happen. In the 60s, I became a teacher like most girls.
The movie excited me in every way because the teens were students at a school for the performing arts. I had heard of this type of school, but I never went there. I went to a local public high school. I joke that I never knew my schoolwork, but always knew my musical songs. I was a terrible student in high school, and all I wanted was to be a performer. I loved to sing and dance, but my mother always said I had some talent and many girls had more talent than I did.
Fame is the story of kids who want to be singers, dancers, or musicians. Irene Cara, who portrayed Coco, was the star of this movie and the title song, "Fame." I listened to the title song constantly. The lyrics just made me excited and hopeful.
She sings of longing and knowing that she can make it. I always wondered what “make it meant. Irene portrayed the flame she would make and never stopped believing she had the talent. She knew she would land the life she wanted so desperately. I felt that way, too.
Today, I’m a senior who doesn’t yearn to be a star, but I enjoy musicals more than ever. Nothing could stop me. I wanted the fame and the world to know me because I thought I was a nobody. If I were a star, I would never be a nobody again.
The movie portrayed the ambition of teens, and as a teen I felt the same way. I was ambitious yet worried about being rejected, and rejection was a central part of the movie's theme.
I felt rejected throughout high school, so I related to this movie. The success of some of the cast members spurred me on, and the song Fame made me excited to pursue my dream.
The absolute truth was that I was in only a few shows and was too scared to pursue my dream. I became a teacher even though I was not meant to be one.
Today, I’m a senior who doesn’t yearn to be a star, but I enjoy musicals more than ever. It makes me happier than anything else in this world.
